This small, western community is cow country USA! Meeteetse is an old Indian word meaning "where chiefs meet." Indians, cowboys, outlaws and miners met in Meeteetse because of the abundant wildlife, a mild climate and fantastic natural beauty. The Old West still lives on in Meeteetse, with wooden sidewalks, hitch rails for your horse and colorful people. Founded in the 1890's, it is a quiet, unhurried place, steeped in western history.
Meeteetse has a modern, K-12 school system, two museums, a library, post office, bank, several restaurants, churches, fire department, quick stop and gas station. Excellent medical services are available in nearby Cody. Airline service is found in Cody and Billings, Montana with connections through Salt Lake and Denver.
The East gate of Yellowstone National Park is just 50 miles west
of Cody, and within easy driving distance for a day-long excursion from
Meeteetse. To the south of Meeteetse is Thermopolis, Wyoming, famous for
its hot springs and dinosaur museum. To the north is Cody, Wyoming, founded
by Buffalo Bill Cody in 1896 and home to the famous Buffalo Bill Historical
Center. Fine Western shopping and dining and the Cody Night Rodeo are among
Cody's many other attractions.
